Abstract was trained as a Eventing horse but developed some nasty habits sometime into her career. She would rear and spin or buck and duck to dislodge her rider during the dressage phase. She was clearly a horse who was unhappy in her work but for whatever reason noone noticed. She found herself abandoned in the committee and labled as a horse that was nearly unridable.
When I first laid eyes on her my first impression was a sad misunderstood horse who just had something to say. Against the wishes of our head trainer it was decided to bring her home and see what kind of story she told. This mare was once a champion and seeing her abandoned and alone broke my heart.
After she had settled into her new routine at the farm we slowly started to bring her back into work. Her first ride just just a gentle hack around our exercise track. She seemed happy with her ears up and a little snap in her gait to show her enthusiasim. We continued this light walk/trot work for a few days before bringing her into the arena. The minute she entered the arena it was like someone flipped a switch. He ears went back she got very tense and you could just feel the change in her attitude. We decided to leave the arena and go back to the track before things got ugly. Once away from the arena again she was once again perfectly happy.
It seems our little mare is extremely ring sour from her extensive and exsaustive career in her youth. In her day Abstract competed not only as an Advance Eventer but as a Grand Prix Dressage horses and a Grand Prix Jumper. We feel that all the stress to keep up with this schedule pushed this little mare over the edge.
We have decided to leave the ring behind us with this little mare for awhile. She is extremely happy as a trail horse with drive and energy we have never seen before. On a whim we have decided to try her at the lower levels of Endurance. While she will probably never reach the high levels its something she seems to enjoy.
